Headlice

Most children play host to headlice during their school career. The lice prefer clean heads!

Parents are asked to check their children's heads regularly. If lice (or nits, the eggs) are found, please keep the child at home, notify the school and apply the appropriate lotion (available from any good chemist). The child may return to school once the treatment has been completed. Alternatively, possessing a good nit comb is very useful.

We notify parents of children in the same class when a case has been reported. This enables all parents to have a good look! You can print off a copy of this letter (please see below).

Health

See "Medical Matters".

Holidays

We ask parents to think very carefully before taking their child/ren out of school during term. The children are only in school for 38 weeks each year and time out can be very disruptive to their education.

If it is unavoidable, the Education Act, 1944, allows up to 2 weeks leave per year for a family holiday. A form (obtainable from the school office) must be completed well before the proposed absence.

In addition to the set holidays, on five days each year the school is closed for staff training. Dates of these closures are published well in advance in our Newsletters and Home-School Agreement.

Homework

The school does not set formal homework like a secondary school, according to a strict timetable. We do, however, expect that all the children supplement their schoolwork at home.

The children will be required to learn weekly tables and spellings and practice their reading. In the Upper School (Y5 & Y6) there will be a greater emphasis on researching topics at home (and in the public library) literacy and numeracy tasks and on completing class work.

We ask for parents' co-operation in ensuring the children have the opportunity to study in peace and with parental support and encouragement.

All children are required to undertake homework as clearly outlined in the parents' flyer. The homework set progresses in duration and challenge as the children move through the school.

A homework diary is kept that provides two way communications between school and home. Homework not only gives children the opportunity to practice and develop skills learnt in their lessons but also gives the opportunity for independent study where pupils take responsibility for their own progress and development.

Bracknell Forest Local Education Authority have purchased on behalf of all primary schools "This is the way we do it", a support pack for the teaching of Numeracy in the school and at home. Please feel free to save the attached document to print at home for your use in helping your child with Numeracy homework.
