M is for...

Mathematics

Bracknell Forest Local Education Authority have purchased on behalf of all primary schools "This is the way we do it", a support pack for the teaching of Numeracy in the school and at home. Please feel free to save the attached document to print at home for your use in helping your child with Numeracy homework.

Meals

School meals are available for all the children. The meals are cooked on the premises by Caterhouse, a private contractor, and every effort is made to ensure that a healthy and balanced diet is available.

The children pay for meals daily at a cash register. The current charge is £1.65 for the set meal.

The children should bring their money in a named purse. In the Lower School the teacher will look after the purse.

Families in receipt of Income Support may qualify for free school meals. Full details may be obtained from the School Office.

Many parents prefer their children to have a packed lunch. This should be brought to school in a named plastic lunch box. Drinks containers should be watertight (no cans or glass bottles please). The inclusion of sweets in packed lunches is not recommended. The children eat their packed lunches in the school hall.

The system is flexible and the children may alternate between a school lunch and a packed lunch.

We must receive a written instruction before allowing a child to return home to lunch.

Medical Matters

We enjoy very close links with the School Health Service. Our School Health Nurse is a regular visitor to the school.

All children will have their height and weight checked in their first year and be given hearing and eye tests If there are any matters which require further attention, an appointment can be made to see the School Doctor.

At other times the school nurse is always happy to discuss health related issues with parents, either at school or at home. An appointment may be made through the school office.

If your child suffers from a "life threatening" condition, it is essential that this is discussed fully with the Headteacher at the time of admission.

Medicines

We are only able to administer medicine to the children provided:

a) the medicine is prescribed by a doctor and is brought to school on a daily basis in a named, container.

b) permission has been granted by the Headteacher and medication form has been completed by the parent, either by calling into the school office or by printing off the appropriate form (see below).

c) the school will not be held liable for any missed doses.

We cannot administer eye and ear drops.

For those children suffering from asthma, we keep their inhaler in school for use as required. For those children requiring a regular midday dose, a member of the office staff will be on hand.

Please let us have written details of any on-going medical conditions/medication at the time of registration.

Moving House

If you anticipate moving, please will you let us know as soon as possible, this helps with our planning.

If you are moving within the locality, but outside our normal catchment area, the children may remain at Holly Spring provided you can arrange transport. In these cases please let us have the change of address and telephone number as soon as possible.

It is also important to notify us immediately of any other changes of circumstances.

Music

In addition to the music taught during regular lessons, the children will have the opportunity to learn an instrument on a fee-paying basis with the Music Trust.

The Berkshire Young Musicians' Trust provides teaching of the violin, brass and guitar to children in Year 4, 5 and 6. A charge is made for the lessons and before a child starts there needs to be a demonstration of commitment (by the child and the parents).
